Tesla submits application to expand German factory 2022-05-30 09:20

According to foreign media reports, Tesla has submitted an application to the local government to expand a further 100 hectares of land east of its German factory to expand the factory area by one-third.

Greenhead Mayor Arne Christiani revealed to local paper media that Tesla’s German factory currently covers an area of 300 hectares, and the company plans to build a freight terminal, logistics area and parking spaces on an additional 100 hectares of land. Tesla’s application will be discussed at a city council meeting on June 2.

Tesla did not immediately comment on the report.

In March of this year, Tesla’s German factory was officially put into operation, with an annual production capacity of 500,000 vehicles at full production. The plant has previously suffered a series of licensing delays that Musk has said runs counter to the urgency needed to combat climate change.

When Tesla was finally allowed to start production at the plant, the local water provider warned that it would be impossible for the existing water to service future expansions of the plant if Tesla did not bring in water from other regions.

In addition to expanding the German factory, Tesla has previously considered a massive expansion of the California factory. The plant currently has 5.3 million square feet of manufacturing and office space and produces 600,000 vehicles a year, including 500,000 Model 3 and Model Y vehicles and 100,000 Model S and Model X vehicles. But the plant’s contribution to Tesla’s 2021 delivery figures is smaller. In 2021, the Shanghai Gigafactory will account for 51.7% of Tesla’s total deliveries, surpassing the Fremont, California factory.
